Country coverage

Google Maps scraper New Zealand

New Zealand is small enough that covering the entire national market is a realistic project rather than a long-term programme. Auckland alone holds roughly a third of the country businesses. The trade-off is that the market is small enough for outreach to saturate quickly, so list quality matters more than list size here.

What you get

  • National coverage from about a dozen centres
  • Auckland searched by suburb, which is where the density is
  • NZ phone formats and regional prefixes captured as listed
  • Filters for website status, rating and review volume
  • Macronised Māori business names exported without corruption
  • Small, clean exports suited to a market this size

A dozen centres is national coverage

Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin, Palmerston North, Napier and Hastings, Nelson, Rotorua and Queenstown cover most of the country commercial activity. Auckland needs breaking into suburbs — North Shore, Manukau, Waitakere, Central — because it is large enough to hit result caps on its own. Everywhere else, a city-level search usually returns the full set.

A small market saturates fast

In a country of five million, a category in a city can be a few hundred businesses. You will exhaust it, and so will your competitors. That changes the strategy: a narrow, well-qualified list worked carefully beats a broad one blasted, because the same prospects will hear from you again and a bad first impression removes them from the market permanently.

Māori place and business names

Many business and place names use macronised vowels, and stripping them is both a data error and a discourtesy that lands badly in outreach. Exports are UTF-8 so the macrons survive, but Excel on Windows will mangle them on a double-click. Use the Excel export or import the CSV explicitly as UTF-8, and check a Whangārei or Ōtautahi row before sending anything.

The Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act

The Act requires consent, which can be express, inferred or deemed. Deemed consent covers an address published in a business capacity without a statement refusing unsolicited messages, provided your message relates to that role, which is the basis most B2B email here relies on. Messages must identify the sender and carry a working unsubscribe. The Department of Internal Affairs enforces it.

Privacy Act obligations on the data

The Privacy Act 2020 applies to information about identifiable individuals, which includes a business email address carrying a person name. The information privacy principles cover how you collect, store and use it, and people can ask what you hold. Collecting from a public source does not remove the obligations, and the Privacy Commissioner has been explicit about that.

Frequently asked questions

How many cities do I need for national coverage?

About a dozen, with Auckland broken into suburbs because it hits result caps on its own. Most other centres return their full set from a city-level search.

Do macrons in Māori names survive the export?

Yes, the file is UTF-8. Excel on Windows will still corrupt them on a double-click, so use the Excel export or import as UTF-8 explicitly.

Can I email NZ businesses without express consent?

Often yes, under deemed consent, where the address is published in a business capacity without a refusal statement and your message relates to that role.

Does the Privacy Act apply to publicly published business emails?

Yes, where the address identifies an individual. Collecting from a public source does not remove the information privacy principles.

Why does list quality matter more in New Zealand?

Because the market is small enough to exhaust. The same prospects will hear from you repeatedly, so a poor first approach removes them permanently.
